This past week has been super-stressful with 10 work days, relatives coming, and my grandpa have surgery, etc. So it was nice to take a little time to relax and work on a zombie story.

Sonoma County CA separates elderly gay couple and sells their home

Someone in comments pointed out how fucking convenient it was for the hospital/county to call them "roommates" for the purposes of visitation, etc. but then when they decided to auction off belongings every single thing BOTH guys owned was sold.

This entire situation makes me want to punch somebody's face off.

DW mini tutorial

Some people have been having some difficulty with OpenID and comment notifications. The most common reason for this is forgetting to 'set' and 'confirm' the email address where notifications are to be sent.

I know some people grumble about having to jump through hoops in order to comment on another site, etc. but it really is very simple. And once it's done you don't have to mess with it again. I've been commenting on LJ via OpenID for months (even though I have an account there), and I don't even notice the difference.

I decided to make an OpenID for DW using my old LJ account, landshark1129.

I pretty much did a spit-take when I read this:

Cooking and general weirdness ?:{

Today I decided to expand my culinary horizons and cook a whole chicken. Beer Can Chicken!

I heard about awhile back, but I wasn't sure if it would work in the oven. Turns out it does.

It was very good, extremely tender, and pretty easy to do if you don't mind touching a wet, floppy, corpse. I don't know how often I will make it, though, because I don't like skin or dark meat (I gave that stuff to my grandparents). It's cheaper and faster to make crunchy onion chicken from a bag of frozen tenderloins (and it tastes just as good, maybe better). But it was an experience and my Grandma had fun laughing at me trying to shake all of the internal organs out instead of just reaching in and grabbing them.

In other news, I noticed this on my last trip to the Chinese buffet:

Fool your friends AND LAW ENFORCEMENT. Although I'm pretty sure I saw a GREEN MUSTACHE IN THERE. o_O
I was THIS close to getting one and wearing it as I made the rounds--but I pictured it falling off into the giant sweet & sour sauce pan and I've already had an 'incident' at the sweet & sour sauce, so I didn't want to take any chances.

Two things.

1. So yesterday I went to Walmart and a guy on a cell phone says in all seriousness:

"They have The Incredible Hulk or some random dinosaurs [sheets]--which one does he want?"

*Pause*

"I don't know...the Hulk looks kind of angry."

I thought he was making a joke, of course, and just about piped in with "You wouldn't like him when he's angry." But the guy was totally serious. A complete stoneface. I quickly shuffled around the corner so I could laugh at him.

Sorry, sir; we're all out of Happy Hulk sheets. Look at these dinosaurs, though! They're practically dancing they're so full of ~~other dinosaurs~~ joy!!!

2. In other news, I am trying to expand my horizons, food/cooking-wize, so I ditched my boring old 4 cheese marinara sauce and got:

Photo/Video: Jensen's House

This is the inspiration for Jensen's house. I fudged a few things (this house was built 13 years later, doesn't have a library, and sits on a small lot downtown), but otherwise it's pretty close. I know the owners and have been there several times. They've turned it into a really cute Bed & Breakfast (they live on the third floor, and guests get full access to the 1st and 2nd floors and the garden).

ETA: There's also a video tour, if you're into that kind of thing.

A job that is parallel to my desired field AND allows me to play with PUGS?!

So, I had a job interview today.

I responded to this Craigslist ad:

I'm a busy female executive in desperate need of someone that can assist me with various tasks: keeping my schedule, phone calls, scheduling travel, organizing bills and mail, occasional grocery shopping, returns to stores, sometimes taking my dogs to the park, possibly housesitting, etc. Hours are PT and flexible and will average about 10-15 hrs per week. Attention to detail, trustworthiness and enthusiasm is a must! Please respond with a resume OR an email telling me about you, what your goals are and why you would be a good fit for the position.

I figured, why not? I never usually mess with Craigslist because of the creepy factor, but I'm running out of money so I'm willing to take the chance. Turns out she's a private investigator. Who owns her own agency with offices in town and in L.A. And she is really cool and has two pugs and a lab for me to play with. And I would get to do some work in her office doing background checks and stuff.

I've never had such a cool job within my grasp--and I think I rocked that job interview (we mostly just bonded over our love for dogs and our hatred for L.A.), so hopefully somebody doesn't interview within the next few days who is way more awesome than me.

I should find out for sure by Friday, so send me good vibes or whatever!

...But I actually managed to write some fic. For 2 different memes. On the same day. Its probably the most writing I've done in four years, no joke.

The first one I did was for

The prompt was: Mistaken for a Prostitute!Jared and Undercover Cop!Jense
Jared is inadvertently mistaken for a prostitute - his friends dress him up for his birthday and he gets kind of drunk on his night out with everyone, then he gets separated and lost "downtown." Jensen is the undercover Vice cop who Jared hits on/asks for directions/inadvertently propositions.

Bedroom on a budget.

After many years of living out of plastic tubs and owning a few pieces of modern particle-board furniture and movie posters, I've decided to finally put some time and energy into designing the room I've always wanted. My original pick for a theme was Steampunk, but I've been finding that my tastes run a little more traditional (and I can't find ANYTHING with exposed gears...), so I'm calling my own style Neo Victorian Laboratory. My plan is to get as much as I can from thrift stores, older relatives, yard sales, etc. I refuse to buy anything new unless I can get it on sale.

So far I've only bought 3 things new (2 solid wood stackable folding bookcases, and a brass apothecary lamp from Fred Meyer, all for $100 [original price $150]). I've been able to find another 40 accessories from local thrift shops including: a bunch of laboratory glass, random cool-looking bottles, antique brass and silver pieces, some leather stuff, glass telephone pole caps, old-timey wall thermometer, a faux old-timey clock (saw the same exact one at Fred Meyer for $40, I paid $5), and my best find: an antique solid wood and glass coffee table that was a steal at $36--but I happen to buy it on 'All furniture is 50% off' day for a sweet $18! I'm keeping a running total of everything I spend on this, so far I'm at $200, which is pretty good.

I took a few inventory-type photos of all my purchases so far:( several photos inside )

I still have a lot of old crap to get rid of, and I have and old dresser waiting in the garage so this is very much still under construction.

I have no cooking or baking skills (clearly) but I felt compelled to bake a cake. I had all the wrong equipment, not enough frosting, and no idea how to decorate it but here it is:

It's god-awful, I know; the fucking heat ruined the frosting. Seriously, I tried to whip it back to normal and was able to get it up to 'peanut butter' on the consistency scale. But it's 4 layers/ 2 tiers with strawberry glaze filling. And it didn't fall over so I'm marking it down as a win.

And yes, the black icing 'design' is the frosting equivalent of me scribbling on the cake with sharpie. Next time I'll just draw a mustache on it and save myself some time.

I'm posting this from my phone, in my car, in the middle of the night. Stupid fucking newspaper truck is MIA, so on top of being late I'll have to wait for 25 people in front of me to get their papers first.

Anyway, no one reads this so it would be just for me, but I am thinking about posting enrties detailing my return to 4-year university. I've been able to find lots of info/tips for 18-year old freshmen, but I've been hitting some unusual roadblocks as a 24-year old returning junior. And I haven't actually applied yet!

So maybe it will help someone else-or maybe I'll just look over it from time to time to remind myself how much work I've done to get here, blah blah blah.

Ok truck's here gotta go.

Wait, wtf?

I didn't find out about this get-together at the White House until just now, (hopefully because I don't watch the news-not that no one else knew about it either...) but last I heard, Obama was in support of DOMA. Now it's like it never happened:

I've called on Congress to repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act to help end discrimination -- (applause) -- to help end discrimination against same-sex couples in this country. Now, I want to add we have a duty to uphold existing law, but I believe we must do so in a way that does not exacerbate old divides. And fulfilling this duty in upholding the law in no way lessens my commitment to reversing this law. I've made that clear.

I don't really pay attention to the ins-and-outs of the upcoming Stargate: 90210 (also known as Stargate Universe); but am I the only one who didn't know about this:

ER's Ming-Na to be Stargate lesbian?
Looks like Stargate Universe might have a lesbian lead in the form of Ming-Na's character Camille Wray. According to Spoiler TV a casting call has gone out looking for a 35 year old character named Sharon who will play "Camille Wray's (Ming-Na's) long term partner. Sensitive, soulful. Strong emotional scenes. Possibly recurring. GUEST LEAD".

Sounds pretty cool. Here's hoping it turns out to be lesbian love as opposed to business or lab partner. Stargate Universe also stars Robert Carlyle (Mr "Full Monty") and Alaina Kalanj (aka Alaina Huffman) who previously starred as the rather fetching Black Canary in Smallville).
